ART, DESIGN, AND FRENCH CLASSES PREPARATORY SCHOOL FOR COMPETITIVE ENTRANCE EXAMS IN FRENCH HIGHER SCHOOLS OF ART AND DESIGN
IF YOU WISH TO TAKE A COURSE IN A FRENCH ART SCHOOL, OPT FOR A SINGULAR TRAINING TO PASS YOUR ENTRANCE EXAM.
La Coursive is an upgrading course for non-French-speaking applicants who wish to take the competitive entrance exams for French art and design schools. It is a dual course in French and plastic arts and design. The Higher School of Art and Design of Saint-Etienne (ESADSE) and the International Center of Languages and Civilizations (Centre International des Langues et Civilisations CILEC) from the University of Jean Monnet worked jointly to propose this unique program in France.
La Coursive is the first passageway course to support students for an effective preparation to these entrance exams. The course leads to a university diploma in the preparation to art schools entrance exams.
100% of the students who have obtained their diploma have entered an art school, an architecture school or a French university.
When you arrive, you are helped with all administrative formalities thanks to a support with settling in France and a service to help you with these formalities (visa, accommodation, insurance, benefits, bank, etc).
Study Art or Design in France
Art and Design studies in France within the Public Art Schools network are certified by the Ministry of Culture and Communication.
In French art schools, courses are given by artists and designers. Courses are concrete: they are based on the development of artistic projects that are thought, carried out and produced. Art and design courses in art schools combine practice, technique, and theory. They integrate different visual cultures, as the work is comprehended throughout all its historical, social, political, and anthropological dimensions. Art schools develop students’ creativity and analytical mind ; they train creators and artists who produce works or creative projects.
Each school has its particularities and propose different offers:
They have one, two, or three departments: art, design, communication, and they all have their specialties.
We usually find:
> The Art department which corresponds to every artistic specialties, may they be classical or contemporary: painting, sculpting, photography, filming, installations, performances, etc ;
> The Design department which corresponds to the creators’ training in different fields; for instance: design objects, industrial design, space design, graphic design, fashion, web design, service design, etc.
The conditions of integration in French art schools:
Art schools are accessible through competitive entrance exams. These exams’ conditions are different depending on the school.
However, in every school, the applicant always has a part that consists in presenting a portfolio of works he has carried out, and has to be able to talk about it in French. Professors expect from the student to have an artistic universe, originality in his propositions, curiosity, general knowledge, and plastic art abilities.
Art and design studies in French universities of the Ministry of National Education, of Higher Education and Research :
The Plastic Arts bachelor’s degree’s aim is to acquire techniques and essential bases in plastic arts through the practice of different mediums (drawing, painting, volume, engraving, infographics, filming, photography, performance) and through a theoretical approach in art history, science of art, esthetics, theory of cinema and new media. The following master’s degrees enable the deep study of these techniques, and the acquisition of an expertise in your field of specialty. They prepare you to enter the work sphere.
Conditions of university integration:
Based on application file. Requirements: Having the necessary diploma to ask for an equivalence, and having the required level of French (B2-level for a bachelor’s degree, C1 for a master’s degree).
IN ORDER TO GUIDE YOU DURING YOUR ADMISSION INTO A FRENCH COURSE, LA COURSIVE ENABLES YOU TO:
- Reach a B2 level in French (level of the CECRL: Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), while preparing the applicants to a TCF (Test of French Knowledge) or a DELF (Diploma of Studies in French) of that level,
- Approach the French language throughout plastic issues as a preparation for the entrance exams,
- Discover the French art and design culture,
- Initiate yourself to art and design course in France through the development of projects,
- Develop your own creativity.
The course consists of 25 hours per week of face-to-face teaching, plus hours for projects and personal work, making a total of 600 hours:
- 350 hours of French as a foreign language taught at the University of Jean Monnet in Saint-Etienne through its language preparation center (CILEC)
- 250 hours of artistic teaching taught at the Saint-Etienne Higher School of Art and Design (ESADSE).
Every year, two classes of maximum 20 students can be opened.
The number limitation guarantees the quality of the formation.

- Orientation and advice for the choice of the schools,
- Production of works in France that are going to be presented during the exams,
- Preparation of portfolios,
- Training for the interviews

Getting a bachelor’s degree: a 3-year course (a A-level equivalent is required)

- DEEA: Diploma of Architectural Studies Issued by the National Higher Schools of architecture and landscape in France

- Plastic Art bachelor’s degree Issued by French universities.
After a 2-year course:

Getting a Master’s degree : a 5-year course, when entering in equivalence (: when directly entering in the 4th year) (a 3-year bachelor’s degree level is required)

- DNSEP: National Superior Diploma in Plastic Expression
Issued by the Higher Schools of arts and design of the Public Art Schools network
- DEA: Architecture State Diploma (Master’s degree level)

Master diplomas, issued by the Ministry of National Education, of Higher Education and research, are numerous. In order to choose a specialty, you need to refer to the universities’ websites. Some of the Applied Arts Schools also issue master level diploma.

- To be 18 year-old, have a school leaving diploma and a proficiency in French to level B1.

At the arrival in France, fees will be paid:
- Tuition fee: 5090 €
- Student life fee: 91 €
> Modalities of payment: Credit Card or bank transfer. No reimbursement of the tuition fees for the course of the registration at the university will be accepted after the beginning of the course.
