Famed throughout France for the friendliness of the local people and the warmth of its welcome, the population of the greater Saint-Etienne area numbers over 170,000. Saint-Etienne has the honor of being the only French city designated Creative City of Design by UNESCO.

 Enjoy a rich student life

A university town, Saint-Etienne has over 27,000 students, with 20,000 of them attending the Jean Monnet University, including 3,000 exchange students. According to the student review website letudiant.fr : “The students love the lifestyle as well as simply the overall atmosphere of the Loire region’s capital”. In Saint-Etienne there are initiatives galore designed with students in mind so you can enjoy an entertainment-packed student life. Every year when school starts in September and in January approximately fifteen events are held to draw the city’s entire student population together.

Saint-Etienne is also known as a city with some of the most attractive rent levels in France. On average a student will only spend 349 Euros a month for a studio apartment. As for public transportation, the student pass is 218 Euros and includes Noctambus, a night service running Thursday through Saturday nights, midnight to 5 a.m. And if you’re more into cycling, you’ll love the VéliVert system, for short- or long-term bike rentals!
